Data Resources
A note on the data resources for Working With Political Science Research Methods, 2e
The data sets and files on this Web site contain data and other materials in a variety of formats. Our goal is to provide you with as many options as possible so that you are not restricted to any one particular piece of software or operating system.
The SPSS formats used should be compatible with all versions of SPSS. Those saved in ".por" format should open on operating systems like Unix. Those with a ".sav" file extension are standard SPSS saved files.
Some files marked ".dat" contain a "tab" delimiter, which means that a tab separates individual data points. Most programs, even word processors, should be able to read these files, at which point they can re-formatted to serve your purposes. Also note that some of the data files contain variable names in the first row or line. Many programs such as SPSS can use these data if the correct options are set. New versions of SPSS in particular have "import wizards" that walk a user through the process of creating an SPSS file from this kind of ".dat" file. All are contained within “.zip” files.
Needless to say, use a word processor or content analysis program to work with text files such as the speeches.
